What the Hell Got into the President's Pet???

Let me start with these words: I am NOT a fan of George W. Bush. And I repeat, I am NOT a fan of George W. Bush. That said, I must come to the poor man’s defense today.

The things people will do never cease to amaze me. So long time Bush-loyalist Scott McClellan has written a new soon to be best seller on his former boss. The early release of What Happened: Inside the Bush White House and Washington's Culture of Deception, is sure to be on the NYT Best Seller list in no time. But one has to wonder… one can’t help but beg the question… Why did McClellan write this book?

Here is Scott McClellan, someone who defended the President through thick and thin, someone who, by his own admission, was quelled into submission by a tyrannical President who made sure that no one working for him make any news that would make him seem unpopular. (As a side note, I wonder how that is working for him.)

Now, Mr. Scott McClellan, who in April 2006 all but declared his undying devotion to the President with the words “I have given it my all sir and I have given you my all sir…” has decided to write a damning book about this “Sir.”

I suppose the surprising thing about the popularity of Scotty’s new book is that (although I have to admit I have not read it, and don’t intend to) the book is not terribly surprising. Be honest. Whenever you read one of the myriads of articles about this “great new book” and find out that it divulges such amazing secrets like the President’s alleged deception of the American people over the invasion of Iraq or that the President tried to curb any negative discussion of his administration, are you going to gasp? Stand there in front of the newspaper or sit there in front of the Internet with your mouth agape? Can you honestly say you’ve never heard this before?

But… but… you say. We’ve never heard this from someone like Scott McClellan! I mean, who would have thought he would come forward with something like this? And I respond… Are you serious?

Scott McClellan had almost unequalled access to the President between June 2003 and April 2006. Who would know better about the President’s (alleged) inappropriate conduct than he? And who would be more afraid of Bush? I don’t blame Scott McClellan for trying to defend the President’s actions or even for trying to hide them; after all, that was his job, and at least at first, he didn’t to lose it. But I think you can see that McClellan only had the direct knowledge of the President’s activities that everyone else in the country already had indirect knowledge of. The President runs on propaganda, McClellan says, and the President times his major actions with elections and other times when he needs an advantage. Is anyone shocked? I don’t think so.

So then why did he do it? Why did McClellan write this book that essentially preaches to the choir? I have two theories on this. The first, maybe he’s just a really great guy that wanted to come clean and tell the American people what he saw really happened in the White House and confirm what we already know. The second, maybe he realized that so many people in this country that hate Bush will read his book and say… “Yes, yes, I’m with you! Let’s gripe on and beat the dead horse because we LOVE it.” Thus, making McClellan a ton of money on book sales from a manuscript he knew any publisher in its right mind would beg to produce.

I have a preference for one of these theories, but I think I’ll keep that to myself. :)
